Traditionally, the work was done with white thread on muslin cloth but over the period of time the embroidery can be seen on various colours and fabrics. It was patronised by Noor Jahan, the wife of Mughal emperor Jahangir. This work of embroidery which is native to the city of Nawabs often use floral motifs due to strong Persian influence on its aesthetics. The craft of Chikankari is a time consuming and a laborious process involving various steps like cutting, stitching, printing, embroidery, washing and finishing. To promote Chikankari to a wider audience, Lucknow has been accredited received GI (geographical indication) status in December, 2008.
